Recipe
- 👩🍳 Step-by-Step Preparation:
- 1️⃣ Prepare the Filling (Saran):
- -Heat 1 tsp ghee in a pan.
- -Add poppy seeds (if using), roast slightly.
- -Add grated coconut and jaggery.
- -Cook on low-medium flame till jaggery melts and mixture thickens slightly.
- -Add cardamom powder + nuts (optional).
- -Cook till moist but not runny. Let it cool.
- -⚠️ Don’t overcook or it’ll harden!
- 2️⃣ Prepare the Dough (Ukad):
- -In a pan, bring 1¼ cup water to a boil with ghee + salt.
- -Lower heat, add rice flour gradually while stirring.
- -Mix well to form a dough. Turn off flame, cover for 5 mins.
- -While still warm, knead it smooth with wet hands.
- -Dough should be soft, non-sticky, and pliable.
- 3️⃣ Shape the Modaks:
- -Grease hands with ghee. Take a small dough ball.
- -Flatten into a small disc (like a shallow cup).
- -Place a spoonful of filling in the center.
- -Make pleats around the edges, gather and seal the top like a teardrop.
- -💡 You can use modak moulds too for easy shaping!
- 4️⃣ Steam the Modaks:
- -Place modaks in a steamer or idli cooker on banana leaf or greased plate.
- -Steam for 10–15 minutes on medium flame.
- -When they become shiny and slightly translucent — they’re done!
