INGREDIENTS
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 200g dark chocolate (for the ganache)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (for the ganache)
Recipe
- Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
- Step 2: Prepare the Dry Ingredients
- - In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
- Step 3: Mix Wet Ingredients
- - In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
- - Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing well until the batter is smooth and combined.
- - Stir in the hot water (the batter will be thin).
- Step 5: Bake the Cake
- - Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- - Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- - Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Step 6: Make the Chocolate Ganache
- - In a heatproof bowl, break the dark chocolate into small pieces.
- - Heat the heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
- - Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 5 minutes, then whisk until smooth.
- - Let the ganache cool to room temperature before using it.
- Step 7: Assemble the Cake
- - Once the cakes have completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate.
- - Spread a layer of ganache over the top. Place the second cake layer on top, and cover the entire cake with the remaining ganache.
- Step 8: Chill and Serve
- - Allow the cake to chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to set the ganache.
